There are those beliefs we have, which really are like urban legends, we would like to pretend they are ok or perhaps we ignore them in hopes someday they will cease to exist. Unfortunately, there is a global conspiracy whether intentionally or unintentionally to make these beliefs long lasting, constant repetition, and at times debate appears, leaving the spectator to live in doubt, at time times doubt is enough to enable the possibility of believing in something that makes little or no sense, however to the educated mind, all of this constant perpetuity comes to surface. I have collected below some of those none sense beliefs and I explain why they make little or no sense. As usual I welcome your feedback on these, perhaps list more stuff of your own, you think I should have definitely mentioned.

Democracy

cn_image.size.s-romney-obama-president-debate-2
The two party political system seems to not bother the majority of Americans, as they continuously accept it election after election.

We are rather long and gone departed from the philosophy of ethics and truth laid out by Plato in his masterpiece, The Republic. Most of the world now lives on under the belief that all societies should strive for democracy, but what is this thing really? A dictionary definition defines it as “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” So what it means, as citizens we are entitled to choose our members of government, so whenever we encounter a form of government that works on the contrary, we tend to condemn it and even ridicule it.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

When we look at the democracy in the West, what we see is a system that works in a polarity system, it is either liberal or conservative, or democratic or republican. The names do change in whichever “democratic” system in whichever part of the world, but the concept is the same, political debates are usually undertaken by two political figures.  Whether it is the United States with more than 300 millions inhabitants, how is it possible two political ideals be enough to represent all of people?  It does not get any easier if the population is smaller, but it really does not make sense that two candidates really can represent a large number of people. No wonder, there tends to be low voter turn out.

Osama Bin Laden

osama-bin-laden-1980s-afghan-russia-war
Osama Bin Laden in his younger years, another thing that doesn’t make sense, he was armed and supported by the United States during the earlier Afghanistan conflict against the Russians.

The generations of the last couple of decades will not easily forget this name. The boogyman, the mastermind what can be easily be called the most century defining event of the last couple of decade. Of course, we are talking about 9/11, Osama Bin Laden is of course long and gone, but the story will forever stay in our memories, his image will also be engrained in our brains.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

It is now a fact that during the times that Osama Bin Laden was supposedly orchestrating the events that led 9/11, he was in dire health conditions, hooked up to a dialysis machine, so how can a man under these conditions, living in a cave be capable of masterminding of what can be called one of the most successful events in terrorism history. As if it is not enough, the man was not caught until 10 years after, proclaiming it as Obama’s big success story, because he was the hero who caught the boogyman. The United States with all of the most advanced military force in the history of the world, with technology that can zoom into a needle from space, could not find a severely ill convict all this time?

Atheism

Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins has been the face of the atheist movement, a religion almost all unto itself, the idea everyone should conform with the reality that spirituality is pointless because there is no proof of God.

There has been a lot of correlation between being an atheist and being a scientist. It is the main principle of science to question everything and be skeptical unless those believes go through the scientific method, which goes like this: Formulation of a question, hypothesis, prediction, testing. Now, I can see how this will very much work for a lot experiences like in biology, genetics, psychics, but when it comes to abstract things, like love and spirituality, it simply doesn’t work. Putting this aside, not all atheist are science people, however they do tend to think alike, putting it simply for them, if there is no tangible testable proof it does not exist.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

Because not everything can be tested, however it is true science has done so much for us, it has brought us pain killers, vaccines, toothpaste, antibiotics, you name it. When it comes to beliefs, beliefs cannot be tested and yes many things can be looked at from a distance and be called irrational, illogical, but it doesn’t mean they should be dismissed. If you are scientist, you are also a human, you have all experience something abstract like love, whether it is from your loving mother or loving life partner. Ask yourself this question: Can you proof love? Can you use the scientific method and established a viable and believable conclusion that in which love exist?

War

Usually the outcome of war, of course many would say, but war is sometimes necessary and go on cite the rise of the Nazi movement in Germany. Time has proven again, there are better tactics that will give more tactile results without the need of unnecessary human loss.

If you are born in the 21st century, you will have the right to say that you have been bought up in the most conflicted epoch of human history, combined with the 20th century, you are definitely single out, our generations to have witness more wars than all the wars we have learned about in history class. Not even the war situations depicted in movies like Lord of the Rings can compare, this is why reality can be cruder than fiction.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

Out of all items on this list, I think I need to explain this one less. The concept of war as a solution, whether as a microcosm (in our every day lives) or a macrocosm (in the context of society), is simply a fallacy. When does war solve anything? It is nothing but survival of the fittest, alpha male behaviour, which states plainly: you mess with me, there are consequences. It is precisely why when parents decide to yell or hit their children, there will be indeed a tangible outcome, i.e. Behaviour change or response, however it will come accompany with a major caveat. This is why it doesn’t make sense, why add fire to the fire? Simply because it will create more fire.

Feminism

Emma Watson has become one of the newest faces of the feminism movement.
Emma Watson has become one of the newest faces of the feminism movement.

The feminist movement, a movement that favours one gender over another, a single out of one group people as defined by their sexual organs and sexual inclinations is feminism. And why feminism? In some level it is understandable, for decades, and perhaps centuries, women have been treated as second level citizens. It only makes sense, as humans as they are, they would some day stand up and fight the injustice of it all.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

Feminist main point is women should be treated as equal as men. Fair enough, I can agree right there, unfortunately there is a problem with this idea. When women were theated unfairly, say in the 1950s, this was a injust time for them and indeed there was a lot of unfairness towards, similarly to how African Americans were treated up until the emancipation proclamation. The problem is women in the feminist movement seem to be so caught up on being treated different, and just equal. And when they identify themselves as a separate group, it is that separation that defeats the purpose of the first intention, which was to be treated as equal and thus it doesn’t make sense.

Money

The ENRON case is the perfect example of how perverse a corporation can be, all due to the attainment of profit or money.
The ENRON case is the perfect example of how perverse a corporation can be, all due to the attainment of profit or money.

We live by it, let’s face it, we are slaves to money. Everything we do revolves around it, paying the utility bills, the rent, the mortgage, the car payments, the student loan you name it, we deal with money everyday. There is a lot to be thankful about for what money allows us to do, but there is also the vast amount of malice it brings. Out of all, the idea that money equates happiness is one of the worst, as I have explained on a previous post.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

Perhaps the biggest case study to make as to why money doesn’t make sense is the way corporations work. The sole purpose of a corporation is to make as much profit as possible. As it is just like the game of Monopoly where the sole purpose is to make a monopoly while destroying the competition and taking all of the assets, that is exactly the long term goal of a an actual corporation, and it doesn’t even need to stop at that. Most corporations that reach a level at which they attain a good chunk of leadership in their corresponding markets also tend to want to take over other markets. When corporations play this game, there is often little to no regard for people or nature that stand on the sidelines, whether it would be people, other corporations and the environment.

Drug prohibition

scranton-police-dumping-beer-during-prohibition-scranton-pa-1920-to-1933-arthur-miller-studios It seems that we should have learned the lesson left from the bootlegging or rum-running era of the 1920s and Al Capone. It appears there is no lesson left there, the countless of lives that had to be lost or imprisoned as a result of the laws which established what is allowed or not for consumption. Drug prohibition now runs more rampant than ever, since when we discuss “drugs” we are talking a wide assortment of forms it takes, from naturally grown mind altering plants like marihuana or hash to chemically based drugs like ecstasy and “acid.” It alcohol prohibition simply did not work and brought much more problems than it solved.

Why it doesn’t make sense?

We can’t create laws that established what people should or should not consume. It does not work, it is a proven method for failure. It has been suggested before that drug prohibition exist, because it brings control of the drug flow to a few hands, and it does because when there is a black market, a black market has no rules or regulation. An deregulated market brings forth the worst of mandkind, such is the reality lived by Mexicans as they have to face the atrocities of the cartels. So, the best way is to accept the reality that drugs are here to stay, no one is going to un-invent them, so best way it is to let people understand the consequences of overuse. The idea is not new, it has been proven to bring benefits in countries like Netherlands, where it is regulated. Another major reason, or double standard exist when “legal” drugs are actually endorsed by large pharmaceuticals who produce drugs, which are only a prescription away, which have equally deadly consequences to those who become addicted to it. So, why favour one group of drugs over another?   Of course, there are lot of more things that would make this list, it should be understood that there are a lot of conventions we seem to be fine with just because these conventions bring us our society, and although there is a lot to be thankful about, it should not mean we need to be content with some things that really don’t make sense. Instead, we should collectively seek out ways to do different and influence our government to come up with more 21st centuries of changing our society. There is no need to be stuck with solutions from decades past, we are different now, so we must do different things.
