James Cameron is one of this generation’s genius movie directors. Perhaps the movie most guys identify with is the Terminator franchise, especially with Terminator 2: Judgement Day with the Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie was so shocking and cool then, because the plausibility of a half-man half-machine organism was a bit far fetched to conceived as reality that it captivated the imagination. Although, we haven’t yet been able to merge fully living organisms with machines, in the way the 1991 movie showed. We are however at the cusp as society to allow the creation of self aware robots who will be able to make their own decisions. Military drones have been widely talked about recently thanks to the statistics released by the Wikileaks website and leaks, such as those by Edward Snowden, who have opened our eyes to the very careless execution of these “anti terrorist tools.” I won’t be running down those numbers, but to make an example, one leaked official document released in January of this years reports of 330 drone strikes in Pakistan between the years of 2006 and 2009, which claimed the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilian casualties, much of which included children, women and elderly. Other leaks report of wiping out entire villages simply because intelligence reports suspected of Al-Qaeda militia. It won’t be easy to forget that footage Wikileaks released thanks to a leak by private Bradley Manning, the then 22 year old intelligence analyst who was stationed in Iraq. The video footage shows the unscrupulous helicopter gunning of civilians on the ground. This footage as well as thousands of classified documents were released by Wikileaks in 2010, making Julian Assange public enemy number 1 and perhaps the real reason why he is basically living the Ecuadorian embassy in England. These leaks and information being released by various individuals have forever shattered the trust in our governments. Our privacy is virtually inexistent and we are living in a world ran by happy-go-shooting individuals. But what if we transfer the blame from these soldiers who just obey orders to that of machines with zero accountability. Of course, we can always direct the gaze to those who would program terminator type machines, machines who will make decisions about who to eliminate. In case it has not become apparent, I am indeed talking about drones who will be making these decisions and this is a roadmap that the Pentagon is currently rolling out for the next couple of years. This is not somewhat old news, but little is being said about these plans, the U.S. military plans on releasing free these machines will be autonomous and will follow certain sets of “laws” or directives from a computer algorithm. These machines will attack in “swarms” which will be deployed from a “mothership.” Last February, you may have caught the news of the building of the real Robocop which will take the role of disabled police officers. DARPA is constantly looking to build smaller and smaller drones, but the real threat and danger would come if a powerful military giant such as the U.S. military really leaves judgement to machines, then we would be all living in the times of the terminator.
