Ever since General Electric and other companies made sure our society relies on fossil fuels in order to power the majority vehicles that go on land and on air, to machines that have been key in the onset of the industrial revolution. Our reliance on a resource which exist, allegedly, in short supplies has been the crux responsible for the pollution of our planet, for wars that have claimed the lives of millions, for the deaths and disappearance of wildlife and perhaps many others to count, one of them might the irregularities in weather patterns. Technologies have given fruits to many positive developments, just last week researchers from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer have managed to made a development which would take T cells and reengineer them to attach cancer cells, successfully pushing Leukemia patience into remission. Indeed technology does bring good things if used for good, it is only when technology is used for bad that starts to become a problem for everyone, take weapons for example, the U.S. military will be soon mounting laser railing guns on some warships and take camouflage technologies, or drone technology. These are remarkable things that exist, through what they produce, so much less as “defense,” they cause terror and death of innocent lives. A new technology which has received much applause and excitement in recent years is process that is the topic of this post: fracking. Fracking or hydraulic fracturing is the process of fracturing rock by the use of chemically mixed water is injected with highly pressurized water into underground rock formations to create small fractures along which fluids such as gas, petroleum, uranium and brine water migrate to the well. Once this is done, the hydraulic pressures if removed from the well, small grains of sand hold these fractures open from which natural gas is extracted. The U.S. economy has been in serious shambles reflected with low unemployment rates, inflation and poverty. The premise for a new “black gold” was very promising many politicians calling it that one “big break” the world’s superpower needs in light of the serious issues it has been facing. The problem, however is not only an American one, the technology is being used in a number of countries like Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, German, Great Britain, Netherlands etc. The premise of more jobs, and the security to reassure the world that energy demands are perhaps now going to be met. The problem with fracking is that there is just enought evidence to demostrate that fracking is just dangerous and destructive to the affected communities. Some communities are reporting incidence of earthquakes and pollution of water supply. We still will have to find out what pollution of from chemicals released by the process will have on these communities. It is estimated that 600 chemicals are used in the “fracking fluid” including well known carcinogens like: lead, radium, uranium, mercury, ethylene glycol, methanol, hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde. As if the exposure to communities and workers to these harmful materials is not enought, there is also the incredible amount of use of another precious resource: water. Approximately 72 trillion, gallons of water are used to run a gas well, while 360 billions of gallons are produced. Some of the effects recorded to the communities surrounding gas wells, with over 1,000 documented cases of water contamination next to the areas of the drilling, some of these include cases of sensory, respiratory and neurological damaged. In some cases, people living near these communities have posted videos on YouTube igniting the water coming out of their water faucets: The U.S. is the world’s only superpower at the moment, much excitement was thrown in for China to be a clear contender, but these signals have been dimmer, the U.S. does have the world’s biggest and most power military industrial complex, it also has the world’s top advancements in technology. As a pioneer in the technologies that enable fracking to happen, it also means they are ahead of the game. The U.S. is expected to overtake Russia this year as the world’s biggest producer of oil and gas.
If you think fracking has nothing to do with you, you are wrong. Fracking is spreading worldwide, in the U.S. alone it has now been expanding to cover nearly 70% of the territory, which is why we are hearing much about it lately. As a concerned citizen, I worry, because we do not need another source of pollution, a source of illness thrown into our environment, into the air we breath, the water we drink.
